Kit slumped in her chair and stared out the window at the blue waters of Gastineau Channel. Floating on the water like steel swans were the white-hulled cruise ships that visited Juneau every summer. Sunlight glinted off the floatplanes swooping like dragonflies over the water, and the banners Juneau hung to welcome the tourists flapped in the breeze.

Was four years in the wilderness enough to bring him home?

Did she want him home?

Kit sighed, picked up the phone, and tapped in Marge’s number. The phone rang until her machine picked up. After the tone, Kit said. “Hi, Marge. This is Kit. Would you tell your daughter that I won’t be needing her to babysit this evening? Thanks. Talk to you soon.”
